Norbert Singer Fan Club Initiation Festivities at Dixie Tech

23 February 2002

Click on the photo for an even larger panoramic shot of new Norbert Singer Fan Club members practicing the Fan Club Handshake at Dixie Tech. The handshake, really more of a wave, will soon be described on these pages, along with an animated .gif file to illustrate it. But for now, you should understand that the handshake/wave/greeting starts with wagging the index finger back and forth (illustrated here).

Thanks to the Porsche Club of America's Heart of Dixie Region ( http://vista.pca.org//hod/ ) for inviting the Singer Fan Club for an introduction and Mass Induction at their 2002 Dixie Tech. It was an appropriate setting. Huntsville, Alabama, has more engineers per capita than most any other city anywhere and is known for its NASA connections. Space travel was one of Herr Singer's first loves (see the Christophorus Singer interview here). Remember that famous "flying turbo" poster from Porsche with the by-line: "It's no wonder so many rocket scientists are German."

Dixie Tech is a wonderful three-day event held each February and packed full of technical instruction on a wide range of Porsche topics, each taught by popular experts. Most are PCA National Tech chairmen, such as Joel Reiser (seen above wearing the official 2002 Dixie Tech yellow shirt) and Christian Garibaldi (sitting, wearing a blue/white jacket on the left) Jon Lowe (off the right-side) Dale Miller (first sitting on the left, in a white shirt) and other notables such as Mike Valentine, of Valentine One (sitting right in front in the dark shirt) PCA National Treasurer Monte Smith (standing against the wall in the back in a green shirt), Zone Rep Dick Kjellsen (second from left, standing, in blue shirt), and many others such as Bruce Anderson (in there somewhere, hiding by the donut boxes) Bill Mitchel (first on the left) and Charlie Saab (barely seen sitting on the right, below the red wall-mounted hose-reel).

Herr Singer - notice that each of these otherwise-distinguished enthusiasts are seen here practicing the Norbert Singer wave, ready to catch you at the next race. But don't worry, despite their looks, they're a great bunch of people.

Topics covered at Dixie Tech this year included Late-911 tech, Aligning Porsches, Latest Tire Tech and Wheel alignment, 914 Evolution, Bosch Engine Management, 908/3 Restoration, 993 Oil Changes, 911 Turbos, and the Latest 911 Update. A panel discussion ended the sessions Sunday. The group instruction on Proper Singer Club Greeting Etiquette followed the brief summary of Singer's projects at Porsche, introduction to the Club, and of course the Mass Swear-In Induction of New Members.
