Some Spontaneous, Unsolicited Notes & Comments from Singer Club Fan Members

Some members spontaneously supplied comments about Herr Singer. The ones that said I could print it (and they were all good, but some Singer admirers work with competitors, or in otherwise sensitive positions, etc. so they are not automatically added here) are reproduced below.

If you have something to add, let me know at C4S [add the "at" sign here] attglobal.net, and tell me if I can print it and use your name.

I didn't know there was a fan club, but, now that I do I would like to join. Working with Norbert was such a pleasure - and efficient, too!

Thanks

Dear Sirs,

I first saw Norbert Singer, along with Peter Falk, at the Silverstone 6 hour race in May 1976. That was my first experience of Porsche racing and Porsche in general. I was hooked from that day and have followed the 'works' Porsche racing successes around the world ever since.

I have met Norbert Singer, only as a fan, many times and he has signed numerous autographs for me over the years. He is my motor racing hero.

I once told his colleague Walter Naiher at Brands Hatch that the drivers come and go but people like Norbert Singer, Falk, Naiher and Eckert are the constant members of a team, over many years, that brings success to Porsche.

I would be truly honoured if I could be accepted as a member of the Singer Fan Club.

Very best regards

If you love Porsche, you love Mr. Singer.  He is one of the 3 or 4 men that are giants of the mark. We are fortunate to live in the presence of  one of the all-time-greats of race engineering.  I know Enzo Ferrari is up there agreeing.

I've been a member of this great club for several years.  I recently purchased his book and was luckily enough to land an autographed copy.  I am writing to say that I wanted to give back something to the club that would be meaningful.

Having always loved Porsches, I bought a used (now called previously owned) '86 944, back in '88.  The next year, while at the dealership, I grabbed an Accessory catalog and ordered new floor mats. In the same catalog, in the boutique section, were several VHS videos for sale.  One was called Porsche Top Secret and it was a 32 mm color/sound film copied to video that covered the 956; from creation, through development, to sweeping LeMans in its first year.

Herr Singer is shown quite a bit and of course there are great vintage shots of Porsche's racing shop. Is there a way we could make it available to club members?

Anyway as far as I know, this video was only available for one year and it may be a rarity.

Sincerely,
Bill Strecker

Hello Fan Club,

I wanted to pass on a meeting I had with Mr. Norbert Singer this past February at the Rolex 24-hour race this year [2006] at Daytona.

I was attending the event as a pit-crew person with Team TPC Racing # 36, (yes, we won the GT division with our Porsche GT3). I was the fuel manager for the race and after establishing my inventory for the
first few hours I had an hour or so free and wanted to get a few autographs on my Daytona 2006 poster.
I stood in line for over an hour waiting to get to the drivers table. I was only three people away from the autograph table when I saw Norbert Singer walking around and studying the Daytona Heritage Exhibition. I had invested over an hour in the autograph line, but the chance to speak with Mr. Singer and to get his autograph was too great. I turned to the person behind me and told him I have to get out of line for a minute. The people behind me quickly stated that "if you get out of line, you
will have to go to the back of the line"! [Obviously, not Herr Singer-type folks - ed] I accepted this statement and step out of line.

I walk up to Mr. Singer and watched him as he studied the classic 911 race car of the 70's. I ask Mr. Singer: "do you think the 911 is better now or then? Without batting an eye or looking up at me he states, "they are all good!" He was wearing his glasses down his nose and continued to examine the historic race car. His response was from an engineering standpoint and had years of knowledge behind this statement. I am sure he thought I did not know who he was. I then stated: "Do you see any similarities in the new 911 compared to the old?" gain without having to think or debate his answer. Then he states: "Yes, it continues to win races". I
smile and ask for his autograph. He looks up at me for the first time and states: "I am no one special, you want that line for autographs". He points to the table of the race drivers. I too respond without hesitation, "I know exactly who you are Mr. Singer and I know all about that line, I was standing in it for over an hour until I saw you. I can always get their signature, but you are Norbert Singer of Porsche!" He smiles and looks at me as he pulls out his pen and signs his name. As he is signing his name I thanked him for all he has done for Porsche, their drivers and Porsche lovers the world over. He placed his hand on my shoulder and
stated "Thank-you for being part of Porsche too". I shook his hand and returned to the pits to get ready for the race. We had 24+ hours of a race ahead of us, but for some reason I felt we had Norbert Singer in our pits guiding us to victory. The next day our car crossed the finish line first in GT and I knew Mr. Singer was right, Porsche still wins races!

Norbert Singer is responsible for all of the Porsche racecars I loved growing up.  My years as a child revolved around seeing 962s at Road Atlanta.  And although I might not of  landed in sports car racing, part of me thinks that if it      weren't for Singer's creations, I would not be working in racing.  Anyway....

Hi !

My name is Reynald HEZARD, I am a huge porsche fan, and of course, a great admirer of Norbert Singer. I am sending herewith a picture of Norbert with Mark Lieb, Porsche factory driver, that I have taken at the 24 h of Spa 2003.

I'd be delighted to be a part of the Norbert Singer Fan Club. Please count me in !

To honour this great sportman and technician, I'd think giving him the opportunity to start the race of Le Mans would be a great idea !

                 Yours dearly

I have models of the  911 GT1, 911 GT1 EVO, and both 911 GT1 98s and Michelin poster of same that Norbert signed. I asked him to sign them, he said 'I didn't drive them' and I gently reminded him 'it's your car'. He smiled and signed them both. What a great guy. Mr.Self-effacing as ever.

Hello: Please add my name to the list of members of the Norbert Singer Fan Club.
I first met this brilliant yet seemingly shy man at an Indycar race at The Meadowlands in New Jersey back in 1987 or so. We engaged in
a brief conversation and my wife took our picture together. Since then I have been following his career as both a fan and, more recently, as a
member of the Porsche Club of America.
[M]y 12 year old son and I had the great fortune to attend the Rennsport Reunion 2004 in Daytona. We came across Herr Singer in a small corner of the garage
area, chatting with none other than Klaus Bischof, Peter Falk, and Hans Meszger. [photos here] What a find!!! We approached and introduced ourselves. I
related to Norbert how we had met so many years ago and, though I was sure he didn't  recall, he was still most gracious and outgoing. We
both had our pictures taken with all four of them and they signed pictures of themselves that were in the Official Program that we purchased. It was
like meeting a large portion of the Porsche racing department mindtrust for the past fifty years!!
Enclosed are two pictures of my son Rory and myself with Herr Singer. Publish them if you choose to. Regards; Mike
Masterson, Carolinas Region, Porsche Club of America.
When I was a kid I didn't want a pony I wanted a Porsche.
Porsche's should be ridden hard and put up wet and Norbert Singer's engineering skills make that possible.

I actually got to shake his hand at Laguna Seca in '97. I was rambling on and on about how great his creations werer (like a teenage groupie) not realizing I still had a hold of his hand. He gave me this look as if to say, "Enough already!" I'll never forget that!

Dan Knieriemen

Dear Sirs,

What a wonderful idea it was to celebrate Herr Singer's spectacular accomplishments at Porsche with a fan club in his honor. As a member, I feel very special!  Derek Bell's autobiography has a great chapter covering the years he was racing as a Porsche factory driver.  In that section, he mentions how pivotal Norbert's contributions were to the entire team.

I have always gravitated more toward Team Managers than the drivers. I always viewed men like Ken Tyrell and Colin Chapman with such awe and Herr Singer was always at the head of the list. It was so inspirational to see how he sprung back after his horrific pit fire incident.

Living in St .Louis, I was unable to make it to the Rennsport event up  East but hope that another event at a closer venue such as Road America can be arranged with Herr Singer in attendance so we in the Midwest could  also be afforded an opportunity to meet this great man in person.  You may  print this email and use my name as you see fit.

When the final history book is to be written about the Porsche Marque, the names of Ferdinand and Ferry will not be the only ones prominently listed for all of posterity.  There will also be Norbert Singer, that self-effacing man, whose passion is engineering, whose skill is producing some of the most exciting racing cars to be driven on five continents, and whose dedication and organizational ability has produced such winners as never before seen.

If there is now a two-year hiccup in racing Porsches from the factory, it is only that, we hope - a hiccup and not an expiration.

Zum wohl, Herr Singer; we are behind you as fans, though we wish we could be beside you as participants.

I have been following him since I was a "kid" driving VW Beetles in Brazil and Porsche was the ultimate VW in that time (1960's).
I remember when Porsche got to CanAM and so on and the name of N. Singer was associated to every step.
Thanks God I had the chance to chat with him at LeMans just before the great win of 1998. I had a entrance card from Juergen Barth and N.Singer was all the time a friendly person. I was pleased to know and to meet him.
Definitely he is one of the best (unbeatable finder for 'loopholes' in the racing rules!) and his name will be attached forever to Porsche powerful history of racing achievements.

Sirs at Herr Norbert Singer Fanclub:

My name is Fernando Lecaros from Santiago de Chile, South America. As a great fan of Porsche, I can't Ignore the great contribution of Mr. Singer
to the success of that company in the Motorsports, and why not?, to the whole Motorsport world.

I think that a great way to contribute to the discussion of Herr Singer's greatness is put on your page an accurate description of the cars in which
our hero have been involved, because, Can anyone ignore the tremendous success of the 956/962?, or The way of reading rules that made possible the
935/78?, at last, What about the GT1/98 leaving all the major manufactures behind at Le Mans?, and a short history of how all the ideas took form on
Mr. Singer brain.

At last I want to congratulate the people who had the great idea of made this fanclub, to an extraordinary man,

                Sincerely,
                Fernando Lecaros.

What a great idea to pay tribute to such a wonderful person. I have been watching his creations for years.
